The specification is your protection
Before a vendor is approached, before an EPC contractor is appointed, and before a single quote is requested, specifications define what the client actually needs. They are the documents that prevent scope from being interpreted in the contractor's or supplier's favour, and the basis on which bids can be meaningfully compared.
Without clear specifications, the client has no objective standard to hold anyone to. Quotes are incomparable, corners are easy to cut, and disputes about what was agreed become difficult to resolve.

Two different starting points, one common need
Large energy producers
Most large energy producers have their own library of standard specifications covering equipment types, material standards, and engineering requirements. The challenge in a project context is not the absence of specifications, but translating them into a project-specific set of documents that an EPC contractor cannot misread or use to justify procurement decisions the client would not sanction.
Project specifications need to be specific enough to be unambiguous, complete enough to cover the actual scope, and structured in a way that makes deviation visible and accountable. We help clients develop project specifications that close the gaps between standard requirements and project reality.
Small energy producers
Smaller energy producers, including biogas producers, independent power developers, and emerging technology adopters, frequently approach vendors and contractors without any formal specifications in place. The result is quotes that cannot be compared on a like-for-like basis, scope that shifts between proposal and contract, and no documents to fall back on when disputes arise.
We help smaller clients document their process requirements, performance expectations, and technical demands before the market is approached. That documentation becomes the foundation for vendor evaluation, contract preparation, and project execution.
What specifications typically cover
For any given project, specifications are developed as a set of documents covering the relevant scope. What each specification includes depends on the equipment type and project context. Typically the set covers:
Process and performance requirements
What the equipment or system needs to do, under what operating conditions, and what performance guarantees are expected.
Design conditions
Operating and design pressure, temperature, flow rates, and fluid composition. These form the technical basis for all equipment design and need to be clearly defined and agreed before engineering begins.
Equipment and material standards
Applicable codes, standards, and certifications. API, ASME, ISO, PED (Pressure Equipment Directive), ATEX, and others depending on the scope and geography.
Utility requirements
Power, cooling water, steam, instrument air, and other utilities the equipment will consume or require, defined clearly enough to allow integration into the overall plant design.
HSE and environmental requirements
Safety, health, and environmental requirements applicable to the equipment or system, including any site-specific or regulatory constraints.
Inspection and testing requirements
What inspections are required during manufacture, what tests need to be performed before delivery, and what documentation is required as evidence.
Documentation and data requirements
The data books, drawings, calculations, and certifications the client requires from the vendor or contractor, and the schedule on which they must be submitted.
Permit requirements (if applicable)
Where equipment or installations are subject to regulatory permitting, relevant permit conditions and authority requirements are captured in the specification set to ensure compliance is addressed from the outset.
